Waldo Canyon Fire

Another excuse for nothing new. Though I haven’t been inherently busy, I have been preoccupied with a rather large distraction to my city. If you haven’t heard anything about the Waldo Canyon Fire, google it to catch up. An unprecedented fire causing major destruction Tuesday night, and many more homes still in harms way.

Making/photographing helps me process, so I regret to say I turned into a bit of a gawker, but I tried to do so in a safe, rule-following, out of the way fashion. Here are a few pics from the past few days:

Day 2 picture, fire coming over first ridge into view of city.

Fire on the mountainside. Viewed from downtown.

Smoke beginning to consume the city, I had no idea at the time that fire was consuming the front slope.

My city on fire.

Ash the next morning. Possibly the page of a magazine, traveled 10 miles through the air from someone’s home.

Additional Photos Here if you are interested.

It has been emotional, surreal, and draining. Many friends are evacuated, some unsure if they have a home to go back to. They are predicting this will take at least a few more weeks to contain, not sure if that changed after the burst the other night. My beautiful skyline will be altered for years to come, and peoples lives will never be the same.

If you are the praying kind, please join us in praying for rain!

Vacation love: Santa Fe, Great Sand Dunes, mystery aspen grove

We took a relatively spur of the moment vacation before the summer got too crazy. It was unorganized, last minute, unplanned, and absolutely GLORIOUS. Love the chance to take photos without purpose…

Halter to Sweetheart – Simple Refashion

Here is a Goodwill dress. I put it on, it fit like a glove, it was in my cart.

I think the halter is cute, it’s beachy and summery and, the trump card, my husband likes it.

However, the halter makes it feel just a bit more casual. It’s no gown, don’t get me wrong, but when I want to feel more on the dressy side I found this one is quite simple to give a simple nudge. I simply released the seem that attached the halter to the dress, closed that hole you see, and cinched it down with a simple pull.

I kept the stitches all pretty loose so it was easy to undo them when I was done and just put the halter back through.

I forgot to take a picture of my outfit when I had the sweetheart neckline, but here it is minus this amazing necklace which I bought from this local-to-me shop (version of this necklace soon to be available). Also, this outfit is ENTIRELY thrifted. Boots, belt, dress, cardi. I LOVE making outfits from what I have, recreating things in a simple way like this embodies my desire to live simply and contentedly and within my means.

Plastic Bag Storage

This won’t be the last time I use the excuse “life is crazy right now!” I went on vacation, and somewhat stayed on it when I got home. Then got sick. Sorry people, I like sleep even when I am healthy!

I am working on another one of my art pieces as I will be hanging some in a coffeeshop in a few weeks. While digging I came upon these photos of a simple project I did when I lived in a house full of (far less “green” than me) girls.

I found a stack of free coffee bags on Craigs List. I still have most of them. I also had a couple plastic hangers from Ross (a guilty pleasure).

A simple seam and poke the metal part of the hanger through…

…and stuff full of your plastic grocery bags!

Once the canvas bag is full I bring a pile of the plastic bags to the grocery store to recycle. Until then, it hung perfectly out of the way in the garage, and made me look cool.
